A police officer suffered a broken foot while responding to disorder involving young people on Roden Street, South Belfast on Monday, 5th May. A 16-year-old male was arrested at the scene. Police have condemned the attack and urged parents to take action.

Officer Injured in Roden Street Disorder

An incident of serious disorder in South Belfast has left a neighbourhood police officer injured after violence erupted in the Roden Street area on the evening of Monday, 5th May 2025.

According to Inspector Róisín Brown, officers were deployed to the area around 8.15pm following reports of anti-social behaviour involving groups of young people.

Metal Object Thrown at Police Vehicle

During the incident, a large metal object was thrown at a marked police vehicle, narrowly missing the windscreen while it was being driven. The situation escalated when officers attempted to apprehend a suspect.

One officer sustained a broken foot during the arrest attempt and is now off duty for the foreseeable future. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated that this will reduce neighbourhood policing resources in South Belfast.

16-Year-Old Detained, Criminal Charges Expected

A 16-year-old male was detained at the scene, and police confirmed that a criminal justice outcome will be pursued in relation to the incident.

Inspector Brown condemned the attack, stating:

“Assaults on our officers are completely unacceptable and have lasting impacts both physically and psychologically. Injuries like this are not just part of the job.”

Call for Parental Responsibility

Police are appealing to parents and guardians to take responsibility for knowing where their children are and preventing them from becoming involved in disorder that could lead to injury or a criminal record.

“We are asking the community to help us by reporting anti-social behaviour. If you see anything suspicious, please call 101, or 999 in an emergency.”

PSNI and Police Federation: Standing Together

The PSNI is continuing to work with the Police Federation for Northern Ireland to support affected officers and ensure that frontline services are maintained despite ongoing challenges.
