The Police Service of Northern Ireland has launched Operation Season’s Greetings, its annual festive policing plan. Officers across towns and cities will increase patrols, focus on public safety, prevent crime, and tackle violence against women and girls. Project Vigilant will operate in nightlife areas, and the PSNI is urging the public to stay safe, plan ahead, and take simple security steps during the busy Christmas period.

The PSNI has launched Operation Season’s Greetings, its annual Christmas policing operation aimed at keeping communities safe throughout December and into the New Year.

This year’s operation focuses on public safety, road safety, business crime prevention, and tackling violence against women and girls—a key priority highlighted throughout the campaign.

Increased Police Presence Across Northern Ireland

Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said Operation Season’s Greetings will deliver high-visibility patrols in shopping hubs, nightlife districts, and public transport areas. This visible presence is designed to deter crime, reassure the public and support local businesses during one of the busiest times of the year.

Henderson emphasised that Christmas should be a time of celebration, not concern. He urged people to take practical steps to stay safe, such as securing their homes, planning nights out responsibly and keeping personal belongings safe.

Project Vigilant Rolled Out in Nightlife Areas

Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls

As part of Operation Season’s Greetings, Project Vigilant will run in key towns and cities. This initiative involves plain-clothed and uniformed officers identifying predatory behaviour and intervening early to protect vulnerable individuals.

Henderson said the project sends a strong message that predatory behaviour will not be tolerated. Officers will act on reports of unwanted attention, individuals being followed, or anyone appearing vulnerable.

Domestic Abuse Warnings Over Christmas

The PSNI highlighted the unfortunate rise in domestic abuse incidents during the festive season. Henderson stressed:
“We are here for you. Please reach out if you need help.”

Supporting Local Businesses and Public Transport Safety

The operation includes strong partnership working with Retail NI, Translink, the Business Crime Partnership and the hospitality sector. These cooperative efforts help improve safety across high streets, retail parks and nightlife zones.

Translink’s Late-Night Services

Ian Campbell, Translink Director of Service Operations, confirmed the return of late-night bus and rail services, supporting the night-time economy and encouraging safe and sustainable travel.

He urged customers to plan ahead using the Translink JourneyPlanner App or visit www.translink.co.uk/christmas.

Retail NI Encourages Vigilance

Glyn Roberts, Retail NI Chief Executive, stressed the importance of partnership working to combat shoplifting and other crime.
He encouraged shoppers to follow PSNI advice to stay vigilant and support local retailers working hard to deliver a safe, enjoyable Christmas experience.

Belfast Lord Mayor Welcomes the Initiative

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tracy Kelly, welcomed the focus on safety and community partnership during the festive season. She encouraged residents to plan ahead, look out for one another, and enjoy Christmas responsibly across the city.
