Representatives from clubs across the Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) have successfully completed the UEFA Academy Supporter Liaison Officer (SLO) Education Programme. The initiative strengthens supporter engagement and empowers clubs with the tools to improve communication and inclusivity between fans and football organisations.
The Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) has marked a significant milestone in fan engagement, celebrating the successful completion of the UEFA Academy Supporter Liaison Officer (SLO) Education Programme.
Held at the National Stadium earlier in the season, the intensive four-day programme was delivered in collaboration with UEFA and Football Supporters Europe (FSE). The course provided valuable tools and training to club representatives, empowering them to take on the critical role of Supporter Liaison Officer — now widely recognised as a key part of modern football operations.
SLOs act as a vital link between clubs and their fans, helping to foster transparency, mutual respect, and community spirit. With enhanced communication skills and practical knowledge, these trained officers are expected to make a tangible difference in fan experiences and club culture across Northern Ireland.
Sophie Glendinning, NIFL’s Competitions and Operations Lead, praised the programme’s impact:
“Supporters are the heartbeat of our league and play a major part in our strategic vision. We’re delighted to deliver this UEFA-backed programme to our clubs and commend all the SLOs who dedicated their time and energy to this important step.”
The programme earned high praise from UEFA representatives. Herjan Pullen, UEFA SLO Project Coordinator, remarked:
“By investing in the professional development of SLOs, you are ensuring that the voices of the fans are heard and their needs are met. It has been a privilege to host the UEFA Academy education programme here.”
Lena Gustafson Wiberg, FSE’s Head of SLO Development & Training, added:
“We tailored this edition of the SLO Education Programme to the specific needs of the NIFL. Our aim was for SLOs to leave with practical skills, fresh perspectives, and stronger connections.”
The course drew participation from a broad range of clubs and football organisations, including:
This collective commitment signals a positive step forward for fan-first football in Northern Ireland.
