Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has unveiled a new interactive website dedicated to the Borough’s War Memorials and Monuments, offering a digital gateway into the stories and sacrifices that shaped local history.

This innovative platform gives users instant access to the locations, images, and historical significance of each site of Remembrance across the Borough. Visitors can explore Memorials, Monuments, and Commonwealth War Graves through an interactive map, connecting past and present in an engaging and educational way.

Preserving Stories for Future Generations

Developed by the Council’s Memorials Sub-Committee, the website aims to preserve and share the stories behind each memorial for years to come. Many residents and visitors regularly seek information on local sites of Remembrance, and this digital resource now provides a simple and interactive way to discover these tributes across the Borough.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, said:

“This website ensures that our Memorials are not only places of reflection but also gateways to knowledge and understanding. It brings history into the hands of our community in a modern, accessible way, helping us all to appreciate the depth of service and sacrifice that shaped our Borough.”

Bringing Local History to Life

The new website is accessible via QR code and in local Borough museums, with digital displays already available in Carrickfergus and Larne, and Ballymena to follow soon. These interactive features allow visitors to learn more about individual memorials and graves, making the experience both educational and personal.

Chair of the Memorial Committee, Councillor Peter Johnston, commented:

“This launch marks a significant step forward in preserving and sharing our Borough’s rich history of service and sacrifice. The website makes Remembrance accessible to everyone, wherever they are, and invites users to take their own journey of Remembrance through the stories that define our community.”

A Growing Legacy of Remembrance

The War Memorials and Monuments website will continue to expand as new information becomes available, ensuring that Mid and East Antrim’s heritage of Remembrance remains alive and evolving with time.
