A 37-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being charged with human trafficking, false imprisonment, and arranging a sex offence involving a 14-year-old girl. The accused, a Bulgarian national, appeared at Newtownards Magistrates’ Court today, where bail was denied due to concerns over potential flight risks.
Details of the Charges Against the Man
The defendant faces multiple serious charges, including human trafficking with the intent to exploit, false imprisonment of a minor, and facilitating a sexual offence by directing his son to abuse the girl. His 16-year-old son appeared in court on Saturday and was also remanded.
Police Evidence and Court Proceedings
Detective Constable Beggs testified that police could link the defendant to the charges based on the evidence collected. Officers objected to bail, citing risks of the defendant fleeing the country, especially given that he has overstayed his visa in the UK.
The allegations came to light after an emergency call from Bulgaria on July 10, when the girl’s family reported her being held against her will. The girl, who was visiting from Bulgaria, claimed she was raped by the defendant’s son and that she was pregnant.
Circumstances of the Alleged Abuse
According to police, the girl told social workers at a Belfast hospital that the defendant instructed his son to rape her and that she was trapped in the household. She also alleged that the defendant employed other girls for sex and attempted to coerce her into prostitution, which she refused.
The girl’s Achieving Best Evidence interview revealed she initially believed she was on holiday at the defendant’s family home. She described being treated well initially but was assaulted on her 14th birthday, with her attacker locking the door and raping her.
Seizure of Evidence and Defendant’s Denial
Police seized eight mobile phones, £1,000 in cash, and travel documents during the arrest. A 17-year-old girl present at the scene denied being held against her will or forced into sex.
The defendant denied the allegations, claiming that he believed the girl and his son were married, citing cultural traditions. He also claimed that the girl was not confined and denied instructing his son to commit any offences.
Bail Application and Court Decision
The defence argued that the defendant has a clean record in Northern Ireland and that his wife was prepared to lodge a cash surety of £2,200. However, the judge emphasised the flight risk, citing the defendant’s overstayed visa and the serious nature of the charges, and refused bail.
