A 25-year-old man arrested in connection with a large gorse fire in the Sandbank Road area of Hilltown has been released on police bail as investigations continue.
The incident occurred on Saturday, 5 April, and prompted a significant emergency response due to the scale of the blaze.
District Commander for Newry, Mourne and Down, Superintendent Norman Haslett, commented on the situation:
“We would reiterate our earlier appeal not to travel to the Slievenaman Road area of Newcastle due to an ongoing gorse fire — our colleagues at the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service need space to operate.”
He added:
“We appreciate your patience and understanding at this time, as enquiries continue. If anyone has any information about criminal action linked to the recent gorse fires, please call police on 101.”
The investigation remains active, and police are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
