An investigation has been launched following the seizure of approximately 2.7 million non-UK duty paid cigarettes in the Newry area, with an estimated value of £1.6 million in evaded duty and taxes.

The operation was carried out by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), supported by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), on Thursday 24th April. Officers searched a premises in the Camlough area, uncovering the vast quantity of illicit cigarettes.

No arrests have been made at this time, and investigations are ongoing.

Dermot Clarke, Operational Lead at HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service, said:
“This seizure demonstrates how we are disrupting the trade in illicit cigarettes – a crime that damages funding for essential public services and undermines legitimate businesses that serve local communities. We remain committed to working closely with our partners to relentlessly pursue the determined minority who refuse to play by the rules.”

Superintendent Norman Haslett, PSNI District Commander for Newry, Mourne and Down, added:
“This seizure sends a powerful message to those engaged in this type of crime that it will not be tolerated. It also underlines the commitment of all law enforcement agencies in tackling the sale and supply of illicit tobacco products locally. The Police Service is committed to working alongside partner agencies to bring those who profit from criminality before the courts.”

Anyone with information about the illegal sale of tobacco is urged to report it to HMRC online. Information can also be given to police by calling 101 or visiting www.psni.police.uk/report.
