TL;DR: Police and HMRC seized illegal tobacco and cigarettes worth £165,000 following a vehicle search in Derry/Londonderry. Officers warn that buying illicit products harms local businesses and fuels organised crime.
A major haul of illegal tobacco has been uncovered in Derry/Londonderry, with police confirming the seizure of contraband products valued at around £165,000.
The discovery was made on Monday, 15th September, when officers from the Local Policing Team 3, supported by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), conducted a vehicle search in the city.
During the operation, officers seized a significant quantity of counterfeit cigarettes and rolling tobacco.
Inspector Hewitt said:
“Be under no illusion – there is no such thing as a victimless crime. When people purchase illegal products, they deprive local traders of the chance to earn an honest living. The only individuals who profit are those selling the illicit goods.”
Police confirmed they will continue to work with partner agencies to crack down on the illegal tobacco trade across Northern Ireland.
The public is encouraged to play a part in tackling this type of crime by reporting information:
