The Wandering Stick’s Festive Adventure brought Gortin Glen Forest Park to life on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 December, offering families a unique blend of creativity, nature education, and festive fun. Delivered by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, the event encouraged families to reconnect with the outdoors in a playful and meaningful way.
From the outset, children were welcomed by The Winter Wizard, who set the tone with imaginative storytelling and gentle sensory warm-ups. Visitors were encouraged to turn on their “looking eyes” and “listening ears” as the adventure began.
Inside the cosy Gortin Glen Classroom, participants met Navar Willow and Sperrin Soul.
Here, families crafted their very own Wandering Stick companion, decorating and naming it before whispering its name to bring it to life. These personalised creations then accompanied them on the forest trail.
During the guided forest walk, families learned about the impressive California Redwood and the rich biodiversity found throughout the park. Along the route, characters such as Mrs Badger and Holly Berry captivated young adventurers with stories from woodland life.
Playful encounters continued with the Pine Cone Pixie, who appeared with riddles, and Mr Pine Marten’s friend, who added a fun twist at the bridge. The Reindeer Wrangler completed the festive trail with tales of winter wildlife.
These magical interactions helped families understand more about animal habitats, native trees and plants, and signs of local wildlife such as red squirrels. The result was an educational yet enchanting journey through nature.
Councillor Barry McElduff, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, said:
“We are delighted to welcome visitors from across the District and beyond to experience the natural beauty of Gortin Glen Forest Park. The Wandering Stick’s Festive Adventure was a beautiful event offering families the opportunity to spend precious time together in nature to explore the outdoors and create lasting memories together.”
The adventure ended with seasonal treats, including hot chocolate and gingerbread. Families wrapped up warm, pulled on their wellies, and enjoyed a festive day immersed in the sights and sounds of the forest.
