Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has rolled out upgraded visitor welcome signage across Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark. The new panels improve wayfinding, highlight local heritage, and enhance the visitor experience across key villages in Fermanagh, with more installations planned over the coming year.
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has announced a series of improvements designed to enhance the visitor experience across the internationally recognised Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark.
As part of the Council’s Visitor Experience Development Plan, updated information panels are being installed at key locations throughout the Geopark. The initiative aims to make it easier for visitors to navigate the area while deepening their understanding of its unique natural, cultural, and historical significance.
The refreshed signage features a clean, modern design while retaining the heritage-led storytelling that defines each community. Over the past year, new panels have been installed in:
Each panel provides clear, engaging information that supports exploration while celebrating local identity.
Councillor Barry McElduff, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, welcomed the improvements and highlighted their importance for both visitors and local communities.
He said the new signage reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to delivering a high-quality visitor experience, while ensuring the stories and heritage of the Geopark remain central to how the area is presented.
Geopark officers worked closely with local community representatives to develop the content for each panel. This collaborative approach ensures the information reflects what matters most to those who live and work in the area.
Trevor Armstrong from the Letterbreen and Mullaghdun Partnership praised the partnership working, noting that the panels not only help visitors find their way but also share meaningful local stories and heritage.
A further tranche of visitor panels is currently in development and will be installed over the coming year. These additions will continue to improve wayfinding, interpretation, and accessibility across the Geopark.
The long-term aim is to ensure that both visitors and local communities benefit from clear, informative signage across this internationally recognised destination.
Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark is a cross-border protected area spanning counties Fermanagh and Cavan. It was the world’s first transnational Geopark and is dedicated to protecting natural heritage while supporting sustainable tourism and community engagement.
The Geopark is jointly managed by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and Cavan County Council.
