Police have begun a criminal investigation into threats made to elected representatives in Newry, Mourne and Down. The threats appeared in a video circulating on social media, showing masked and armed men making intimidating statements.
District Commander Superintendent Lynne Corbett said such actions are entirely unacceptable. She emphasised that threats against democratically elected representatives undermine the safety and stability of local governance.
Superintendent Corbett stated that police have already started enquiries to identify those featured in the video, adding that officers remain in close contact with local representatives throughout the district.
Superintendent Corbett reaffirmed that the PSNI will continue working with elected members to ensure they feel supported. She stressed that representatives must be able to carry out their roles free from intimidation, and that the police remain committed to protecting community safety.
