A Carrickfergus woman and her family experienced a dramatic moment on holiday this week while travelling in Egypt, after unexpectedly witnessing military activity related to tensions in the Middle East.

Mandy Graham was holidaying with her brother Tony, daughter Hayley, and nephew Niall when they set off to visit the famous pyramids of Cairo. During a roadside stop for food and refreshments, the family was startled to see the sky suddenly illuminated by what appeared to be missile trails and explosions.

What They Witnessed Was Israel’s Iron Dome in Action

Uncertain of what was happening, the family soon discovered via breaking news alerts that Israel was under missile attack from Iran, and what they had witnessed was the Iron Dome air defence system intercepting incoming missiles.

Despite the dramatic visuals, Mandy reassured friends and family back home in Northern Ireland that they were safe:

“I was a wee bit freaked out, but it’s miles away from us, thankfully. We’re continuing with the holiday, but it was definitely something we didn’t expect to see!”

Cairo Travel During Middle East Tensions

While Egypt remains a popular destination for tourists from Northern Ireland, the region’s proximity to ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts can sometimes produce unexpected experiences for travellers. Tour operators continue to monitor regional safety alerts, and tourists are advised to check with the UK Foreign Office travel advice for Egypt and surrounding regions before making plans.

Carrickfergus Holidaymakers Share Once-in-a-Lifetime Story

The family have since continued their journey through Egypt, with plans to still visit the Great Pyramids of Giza and explore Cairo’s rich culture and history.

For Mandy, it’s a holiday story she’ll never forget — and one that proves that even the most ordinary sightseeing trip can suddenly become headline-worthy.
