14-year-old Phoebe from Carrickfergus walked 31 miles in May to raise money for Dementia UK in memory of her beloved great-grandfather, Sammy Calder, who passed away earlier this year. She aimed to raise £500 but ended up collecting an incredible £1,003.
Phoebe, a 14-year-old from Carrickfergus, has shown remarkable compassion and determination in honouring her late great-grandfather, Sammy Calder, known lovingly as “Paps”. Sammy passed away in February after living with Lewy body dementia—but not before leaving a lasting legacy of love and inspiration in Phoebe’s heart.
The pair were more than just family—they were best friends.
Phoebe is no stranger to giving back. In December, she took it upon herself to create and deliver over 100 hampers to local care home residents—something she did in tribute to Paps, who had received care himself.
But her journey of kindness didn’t stop there.
Earlier this year, Phoebe decided to take on a new challenge—walking 31 miles throughout May to raise money for Dementia UK. Despite late grief and tough weather conditions, she started her challenge on 4th May with a goal to raise £500.
Phoebe shared:
“My name is Phoebe. I lost my great granda in February and he was my best friend. Pap had dementia and so we had to learn new ways to understand him and help him. When I saw this fundraiser advertising, I knew I wanted to take it on in honour of Paps. I started it a few days later, on the 4th of May and had to catch up. I loved doing this for a few reasons: it helped to distract me from the grief. I wanted to help other people living with the same disease as Paps, and finally, I wanted to do it in honour of him.”
With the support of friends, family, and the wider community, Phoebe’s fundraiser didn’t just reach its target—it doubled it. She finished her challenge on Saturday 31st May, raising an amazing £1,003 for Dementia UK.
“Thank you to everyone who supported!” Phoebe said.
