Police Warn Public After Sextortion Cases Reported

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is urging people in Derry City & Strabane to be extra cautious online following recent reports of sextortion, a form of blackmail involving intimate images or conversations.

Chief Inspector Cherith Craig described sextortion as a “heinous and disgusting crime,” especially when it involves child victims. She reassured the public that support is available and victims should not feel ashamed to come forward.

“The perpetrators want to shame their victims into keeping quiet about their ordeal and blackmail them for money,” she said.

“I want any young person out there who may be experiencing this to know that police are here to help you. You can contact us in confidence and you will be treated with dignity and respect.”

Sextortion is a form of online blackmail where victims are tricked into sharing intimate content, which is then used to extort money or further images under threat of exposure.
