StoryDreamer, a cutting-edge creative installation in Belfast, is inviting visitors aged 18+ to explore the city’s stories through immersive technology. The experience is open daily from 10am–6pm until 10 December at 2 Royal Avenue, with extended hours until 9pm on Thursday 4 December for Late Night Art.
Developed through the Augment the City competition, StoryDreamer blends film, sound, holograms, archive material and interactive digital elements to capture the diverse voices of Belfast. The project was created by Hamilton Robson, Nerve Centre and 1 Up Studios, funded through the Belfast Region City Deal and Belfast City Council.
One of StoryDreamer’s standout features is its AI-powered holographic guide. Visitors can interact with the StoryDreamer as it prompts them to reflect on personal memories, experiences and hopes for Belfast’s future.
In an interactive, projection-mapped space, users can unlock a constellation of stories using motion gestures. This includes rare archive content from Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), showcasing Belfast’s creative and cultural legacy.
Luke McNeice from Hamilton Robson said the installation demonstrates the power of storytelling in bringing people together and sparking curiosity. He describes StoryDreamer as a playful but meaningful way to engage with Belfast’s evolving story while contributing personal reflections to its growing archive.
Councillor Natasha Brennan, Chair of Belfast City Council’s Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, encouraged people to try StoryDreamer while visiting 2 Royal Avenue. Updated design proposals for Belfast Stories, the major visitor attraction opening in 2030, are currently on display at the venue.
She highlighted how collaborations with innovative digital companies will help shape world-class tourism experiences and enhance Belfast’s global profile.
The Augment the City Challenge Fund forms part of the council’s XR Belfast programme, designed to support creators and businesses working with immersive and emerging technologies. The initiative aims to develop skills, foster innovation and expand Belfast’s capacity for creative digital storytelling.
