The Cornerman Coming to Theatre at The Mill This October

Audiences across Northern Ireland are being invited to experience The Cornerman, a powerful new drama exploring men’s mental health, identity and the struggles many men keep hidden.

The production will arrive at Theatre at The Mill this October and promises to deliver an emotional and thought-provoking performance centred around life inside and outside the boxing world.

Written by Cathal J Ferris and directed by Emma Copland, The Cornerman tells the story of Liam Casey, once one of Belfast’s most promising young boxers, whose life changes overnight after a serious injury ends his career.

A Story About Identity, Grief and Starting Again

After losing the life he once knew, Liam struggles to cope with his new reality. However, when a journalist arrives to tell his story, he is forced to confront memories and emotions he has spent years avoiding.

Using humour, movement and physical storytelling, The Cornerman explores themes including:

  • Men’s mental health
  • Masculinity
  • Grief and loneliness
  • Identity after sport
  • Emotional resilience
  • The pressure to “keep going”

The production aims not only to entertain audiences but also to encourage important conversations around emotional wellbeing and the impact of suffering in silence.

Mayor Praises Important Production

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, praised the production and its message surrounding men’s mental health.

She said:

“This is an excellent production that not only showcases strong creative talent but also plays an important role in opening up conversations around men’s mental health, and I would encourage the community to come along and support it.”

Writer Wanted an Honest Look at Boxing Life

Writer Cathal J Ferris explained that the inspiration behind the play came from an interest in what happens beyond the spotlight of the boxing world.

He said:

“As a boxing fan, I’ve always been interested in the lives people live outside of the boxing spotlight – in a world where strength and toughness are expected.

The Cornerman is about a man struggling to rebuild himself after his life changes overnight, and I wanted the play to feel honest and authentic to the boxing world.”
