TL;DR: The UK Government will run a nationwide test of the Emergency Alerts system on Sunday 7 September 2025 at 3pm. The system is designed to warn people of life-threatening emergencies such as severe flooding, wildfires, or extreme storms.

What Are UK Emergency Alerts?

Emergency Alerts are a government system created to warn people if they are in immediate danger. These alerts are sent directly to mobile phones or tablets when there is a risk to life in your area.

You do not need to sign up, download an app, or enable location services. Alerts are sent automatically to compatible devices based on your current location.

When Will the Test Take Place?

The government has confirmed that a national test of the Emergency Alerts system will take place on:

  • Date: Sunday 7 September 2025
  • Time: 3:00pm

During the test, mobile phones and tablets across the UK will receive an alert message.

Why You Might Receive an Alert

Emergency Alerts are issued in response to life-threatening situations, including:

  • Severe flooding
  • Wildfires
  • Extreme storms

They will only ever be sent by:

  • The emergency services
  • Government departments, agencies, and public bodies responsible for emergency response

What Happens When You Get an Alert?

If your phone is compatible, it may:

  • Make a loud siren-like sound (even if set to silent)
  • Vibrate strongly
  • Read out the alert aloud

This sound and vibration will last for around 10 seconds.

Each alert will include a link to GOV.UK or a phone number for more information.

Safety While Driving

If you receive an alert while driving or riding:

  • Do not read or respond immediately
  • Find a safe and legal place to stop before checking the alert
  • If you cannot stop safely, tune in to live radio for emergency updates

It is illegal to use a hand-held device while driving.

Accessibility and Other Information

  • Alerts include audio and vibration signals to help people with vision or hearing impairments.
  • In Wales, alerts may be sent in both English and Welsh.
  • If you do not have a compatible phone, emergency services will continue to use other methods such as radio, TV, and social media to provide warnings.
