The detectives in Belfast are appealing to the public for information and witnesses after a taxi driver was attacked in the east of the city in the early hours of Sunday, 12th February. Detective Sergeant Young provided the following information about the suspect:
“The man is described as approximately 5’10” in height, with short dark hair, and in his early 20s. He was wearing a grey tracksuit and a grey cap, with dark trainers. The suspect picked up the taxi driver in the Heatherbell Street area shortly after 2.50am.”
According to the Detective Sergeant, when the suspect advised the taxi driver that he had no money to pay for the fare, the vehicle stopped in the Clara Street area. The suspect then proceeded to assault the taxi driver and stole a substantial amount of money before making off in the direction of the Castlereagh Road.
“Taxi drivers should be able to go about their business in our community without fear of assault. This was a terrifying ordeal, and the driver sustained a number of injuries to his face, throat, and neck. The driver was able to alert nearby residents by repeatedly honking his car horn,” said Detective Sergeant Young.
The detectives are appealing to anyone who was in the area or who may have captured footage during the relevant time period of 2.50am to 3.00am to get in touch. Information can be provided by calling 101 and quoting reference 284 of 12/02/23, through the non-emergency reporting form at www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/, or by contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org/.
“This was a serious crime, and we need the public’s help to gather information and bring the suspect to justice. Any information, no matter how small, could be critical in our investigation,” said Detective Sergeant Young.
