Facebook has announced that it will change its name to “META” as part of a major rebrand.
The new name is an attempt to focus on the metaverse that Facebook says will be the future of social networking. But it is also likely an attempt to move on from the intense scrutiny it has faced in recent months and years. The growing criticism has focused on everything from privacy to the damage it is doing to young people.
Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has stated that whilst the blue app will continue to be known as Facebook, the branding will be removed from everywhere else such as Whatsapp and Instagram. All those various apps will now instead live under the brand of “META”, with Facebook just one of those many apps.
In a “Founders letter” published by Zuckerberg, he explained his reasonings for the rebrand, and stated that he would not be standing down as the CEO of the company. There have even been calls from some journalists who have treated the rebrand with a hefty dose of scepticism, to ignore the change and continue to refer to the company as Facebook.
Whilst this change has caused worldwide debate, it is not the first rebrand of the company. In 2005, it changed its name from The Facebook to just “Facebook”.
