Police Newry, Mourne & Down have put out an appeal on their facebook page:
In the early hours of Thursday 17 February, one of our residents had their car stolen from Saintfield.
Our enquiries are now showing that there were possibly 2 males involved, carrying backpacks. We suspect that they made other attempts to steal cars from our community at other addresses in Saintfield. One kept their car keys in their microwave and another in a “Faraday box”. This is believed to have prevented their cars being taken.
This type of car theft is called “keyless car theft”. The suspects use wireless technology to clone your car key signal. As the keys were kept in the microwave and Faraday box the signal was blocked. Similar to an RFID blocker for your bank cards.
I am posting this for 2 reasons…
Firstly did you see anyone suspicious in Saintfield in the early hours of Thursday morning, potentially with a backpack, or perhaps have CCTV footage? Ring 101 quoting ref 237 17/02/22.
Secondly, I don’t want any more of our community to fall victim to these criminals, hopefully, this information will help you better secure your keys and vehicle.
