The group was formed in January of 2008 because, after my breast cancer diagnosis at the age of 42, I discovered that none of the services that were readily available in Belfast were in place anywhere in East Antrim. I decided to try to address this issue, and so my sister and I formed 1 in 3 Cancer Support.
We began with a few extremely helpful volunteers (most of whom are still with us) meeting on a monthly basis, and we are now a fully-fledged registered charity. A true East Antrim charity – we serve only the people of the East Antrim area, and all of our funding / sponsorship has come from the East Antrim area – both from very generous businesses and individual people.
The following is what we do:
We try to let patients and their families in the East Antrim Area to get the services they want locally, so we offer
the following local services free:
- Beauty vouchers for Simply Hair & Beauty
- Counselling with Lynda Graham Counselling
- Flower deliveries with The Little Flower Shack & Victoriana
- Photography with Colin Metcalfe photography
We also try to help patients and their families with practical matters, by helping to pay for the following:
- Cleaners
- Gardeners
- Costs for hospital appointments
- And for those on the road to recovery we offer help with the following:
- Costs of night classes
- Home study courses.
(*The above are offered where applicable, and certain restrictions apply, we are a small charity – but we help as much as we can).
